  • Sparks On The Tracks
    Posted on: 2007-10-24
No holiday fireworks, this light show of sparks raining from the BART tracks Wednesday 10/24 at 2:00 AM. But repeated passes from Marin Ave. to Washington Ave. by this machine may well be cause for celebration for Albany residents whose summertime has been rattled by ear piercing and conversation stifling trains.

Hopefully this grinding of the rails will eliminate the ripples in the tracks caused by steel wheels of accelerating trains negotiating the highpoint of the tracks just south of Solano Ave. Over the last six months the “pothole effect” of constant traffic over these indentations created an auditory environmental hazard of ever expanding proportions. Let your ears be the judge of its success.
The long neglected maintenance of the system tracks can be linked directly to the poor planning by the BART Board of Directors. Thankfully, our vociferous protests worked and the “squeaky wheels got the grease”.

The University of California submitted an application to the city's Planning and Zoning Commission earlier this month for a project that would involve the sale of a portion of its land on the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Monroe Street. The land would house a development with a grocery store -- a Whole Foods according to a city staff report -- and a second mixed-use building containing senior housing and retail space.
